During a quick vacation to South Korea, my wife and I came across this quirky little taildragger. I had never seen anything like it. Have any guesses to what this plane is?
If you guessed Buwhal-ho, you are right! This was a South Korean observation and liaison aircraft. It was first built in 1953 by the Royal Korean Air Force Technical School. The Buwhal-ho is now on display at the War Memorial of Korea in Seoul, South Korea. It sits under the wing of a B-52 also on display.
The Buwhal-ho was powered by an 85 horsepower Continental 0-190 and had a top speed of 180 km/h, or roughly 111 mph. This unique aircraft carried a crew of two. According to the display information, it had been lost for almost 50 years. In 2004 the Buwhal-ho was found in a high school storage facility. Historians restored it to its original markings for display at the museum.
